S<\/span><\/span><\/strong>ticky <\/span><\/span><\/strong>or bush <\/span><\/span><\/strong>monkeyflower <\/span><\/span><\/strong>Diplacus aurantiacus <\/i><\/span><\/span><\/strong>is so common in our area that<\/span><\/span><\/strong> most of the time, we<\/span><\/span><\/strong> barely notic<\/span><\/span><\/strong>e<\/span><\/span><\/strong> it. But this time of year, when <\/span><\/span><\/strong>t<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>he kaleidoscope of spring has <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>begun to <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>settl<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>e<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong> its relentless <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>color shift <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>the <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>monkeyflower <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>provides<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong> a<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong> bit of warm sparkle<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>M<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>ost commonly seen in coastal scrub,<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong> <\/i>i<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>t also grows in<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong> chaparral, oak woodland<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>s<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong> and<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong> mixed evergreen forest<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>s<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>. Natural<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>ly occurring <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>populations occupy a variety of habitats <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>from full sun blasted rocky <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>slopes<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong> to the dappled shade beneath oaks and conifers. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Known to many as <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>a <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>Mimulus,<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong> sticky monkeyflower <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>was <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>un<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>t<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>il<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong> recently <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>classified<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong> in the formerly large figwort <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>or snapdragon <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>family. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>With<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong> the illumination of genetic differences, t<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>he <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>f<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>igwort family got <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>split up<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>What was <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>fa<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>miliar and<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong> observable to the eye got r<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>eclassified according to genetic evidence. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>Our <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>woody <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>monkey flower<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>s <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>were placed in<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong> their own genus <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>Diplacus <\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>in<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong> th<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>e <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>Phrymaceae <\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>or <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>Lopseed <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>family<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>M<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>any of the other well known plants with s<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>na<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>pdragon like flowers got placed in <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>the <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>Plantaginaceae<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong> or plantain family. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong> As to the common name, <\/span><\/span><\/strong>someone somewhere along the way saw the two lobes at the top of the flower tube <\/span><\/span><\/strong>a<\/span><\/span><\/strong>s monkey ears. To my eye it could just as easily be called <\/span><\/span><\/strong>sticky <\/span><\/span><\/strong>bunny <\/span><\/span><\/strong>or bush bear<\/span><\/span><\/strong>flowe<\/span><\/span><\/strong>r.<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

The flower tube <\/span><\/span><\/strong>or corolla<\/span><\/span><\/strong> is <\/span><\/span><\/strong>formed by<\/span><\/span><\/strong> 5 <\/span><\/span><\/strong>fused<\/span><\/span><\/strong> petals<\/span><\/span><\/strong>. <\/span><\/span><\/strong>The lobes,<\/span><\/span><\/strong> two on top and three on bottom, <\/span><\/span><\/strong>are often deeply notched or<\/span><\/span><\/strong> fringed.<\/span><\/span><\/strong> When healthy, this exuberant shrub<\/span><\/span><\/strong> bloom<\/span><\/span><\/strong>s<\/span><\/span><\/strong> prolifically from late winter through mid-summer. <\/span><\/span><\/strong>The <\/span><\/span><\/strong>throat of the <\/span><\/span><\/strong>flower<\/span><\/span><\/strong> displays prominent nectar guide<\/span><\/span><\/strong>s,<\/span><\/span><\/strong> often<\/span><\/span><\/strong> in a different color,<\/span><\/span><\/strong> as<\/span><\/span><\/strong> a<\/span><\/span><\/strong> visual aid for pollinators. <\/span><\/span><\/strong>The flower <\/span><\/span><\/strong>color <\/span><\/span><\/strong>of <\/span><\/span><\/strong>t<\/span><\/span><\/strong>he wild type is in the light yellow to light orange <\/span><\/span><\/strong>range<\/span><\/span><\/strong>. <\/span><\/span><\/strong>Evergreen, s<\/span><\/span><\/strong>ticky, lance shaped<\/span><\/span><\/strong> leaves <\/span><\/span><\/strong>with in-rolled margins <\/span><\/span><\/strong>line brittle stems. <\/span><\/span><\/strong>It<\/span><\/span><\/strong> can range in size <\/span><\/span><\/strong>from 1 to 4 feet tall <\/span><\/span><\/strong>by as <\/span><\/span><\/strong>wide. <\/span><\/span><\/strong>D<\/span><\/span><\/strong>epending upon individual gene expression and cultural conditions <\/span><\/span><\/strong>monkeyflower<\/span><\/span><\/strong> can be upright, mounded, or sprawling. <\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Bush monkeyflower is n<\/span><\/span><\/strong>ot fussy about soil type but<\/span><\/span><\/strong>, <\/span><\/span><\/strong>good drainage is <\/span><\/span><\/strong>essentia<\/span><\/span><\/strong>l.<\/span><\/span><\/strong> W<\/span><\/span><\/strong>ell adapted to our arid western climate, <\/span><\/span><\/strong>this member of the local flora<\/span><\/span><\/strong> go<\/span><\/span><\/strong>es<\/span><\/span><\/strong> into a semi-dormant state <\/span><\/span><\/strong>as the soil dries up<\/span><\/span><\/strong>. <\/span><\/span><\/strong>If your plant is on irrigation, be sure to <\/span><\/span><\/strong>taper and <\/span><\/span><\/strong>turn off the water allowing <\/span><\/span><\/strong>it<\/span><\/span><\/strong> to follow <\/span><\/span><\/strong>its<\/span><\/span><\/strong> normal cycle of summer dormancy.<\/span><\/span><\/strong> Continuous summer water will<\/span><\/span><\/strong> encourage <\/span><\/span><\/strong>root<\/span><\/span><\/strong>-rotting pathogens <\/span><\/span><\/strong>which will<\/span><\/span><\/strong> eventually kill the plant. <\/span><\/span><\/strong>For a tidy appearance, once <\/span><\/span><\/strong>it<\/span><\/span><\/strong> is done blooming, prune back the stem ends leaving a few inches of the current year’s <\/span><\/span><\/strong>wood<\/span><\/span><\/strong>. <\/span><\/span><\/strong>T<\/span><\/span><\/strong>his <\/span><\/span><\/strong>has the added benefit of<\/span><\/span><\/strong> stimulat<\/span><\/span><\/strong>ing<\/span><\/span><\/strong> vigorous <\/span><\/span><\/strong>new <\/span><\/span><\/strong>shoots<\/span><\/span><\/strong> the following season. <\/span><\/span><\/strong>During the active growth phase, p<\/span><\/span><\/strong>inching <\/span><\/span><\/strong>rangy stems <\/span><\/span><\/strong>also promotes strong, dense growth. <\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Diplacus aurantiacus<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/strong> hybridiz<\/span><\/span><\/strong>es readily, creating both naturally occurring as well as intentionally derived <\/span><\/span><\/strong>crosse<\/span><\/span><\/strong>s. Sticky <\/span><\/span><\/strong>monkeyflower has a neat tr<\/span><\/span><\/strong>i<\/span><\/span><\/strong>ck of <\/span><\/span><\/strong>quickly <\/span><\/span><\/strong>closing its <\/span><\/span><\/strong>two-part <\/span><\/span><\/strong>stigma <\/span><\/span><\/strong>when<\/span><\/span><\/strong> touched. Somehow the <\/span><\/span><\/strong>stigma<\/span><\/span><\/strong> senses if the touch contained pollen. If pollen was introduced the <\/span><\/span><\/strong>stigma<\/span><\/span><\/strong> stays closed, if no pollen was introduced <\/span><\/span><\/strong>it<\/span><\/span><\/strong> reopens. <\/span><\/span><\/strong>A helpful sign for <\/span><\/span><\/strong>horticulturalist<\/span><\/span><\/strong>s<\/span><\/span><\/strong> doing cross breeding. <\/span><\/span><\/strong>In the <\/span><\/span><\/strong>nursery<\/span><\/span><\/strong> trade, <\/span><\/span><\/strong>hybrids <\/span><\/span><\/strong>include a wide range of flower colors, bi-colors, flower size and frilliness. Hybrid flower colors range from <\/span><\/span><\/strong>snow-<\/span><\/span><\/strong>white <\/span><\/span><\/strong>to bright yellows, shades of orange, fire-engine r<\/span><\/span><\/strong>ed, <\/span><\/span><\/strong>through <\/span><\/span><\/strong>burgundy<\/span><\/span><\/strong>, <\/span><\/span><\/strong>and even <\/span><\/span><\/strong>pink.<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

In these first weeks of summer <\/span><\/span><\/strong>bush<\/span><\/span><\/strong> mon<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>key<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>flower continues to bloom even though many of the other flowering plants are done showing off. In grassland areas the perennial bunch grasses have flowered and dropped their seed. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>L<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>ate<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>r<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong> blooming California<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong> fuchsia, goldenrod and aster<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong> are just beginning to show themselves. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>The summer swing of things is always entertaining. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>Last week <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>while camping <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>I w<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>atched a pair of <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>V<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>ireos feed with a clear view of the nest and then got to witness the heart in throat moment<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>s<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong> of fledg<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>l<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>ing<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>s taking to the wing<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>On <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>the <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>last day of my visit,<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong> I happened to be <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>standing still <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>looking at <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>the <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>creek when a b<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>lack <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>bear <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>with tawny highlights exited a<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong> willow thicket across <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>the broad <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>channel<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>, sniffed the air, looked around a bit and then moseyed on down-stream.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n
