Event of the Month: A talk on “Layered Gardening for the Birds” coming up next Saturday, April 27th.

One of the harbingers of Spring/early Summer is seeing our feathered songbird friends gather materials for nesting and then raising their young. They fly around our shop gathering cobwebs, dried grass stalks, anything fluffy, for nests. We don’t do any hard pruning of our trees at this time, as there are many nests. Hummingbirds will nest at eye level, so can be startling to see!

It’s important to include a source of water for birds, plenty of cover to nest in various evergreen trees, some gravel for their gizzards, and of course lots of host plants for caterpillars. Caterpillars love many of our easiest Native plants, and on Saturday we will go over some easy ones for Bay Area Gardens. This talk is part of the Bringing Back the Natives tour, which has a strong environmental focus. Join us! Talk at 2:00pm.
